The Cold War was a state of geopolitical tension after World War II between powers in the communist Eastern Bloc (the Soviet Union and its satellite states) and powers in the democratic Western Bloc (the United States, its NATO allies and others).
The Cold War ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
The term "cold" is used because there was no large-scale fighting directly between the two sides involved in the conflict, although there were major regional wars, known as "proxy wars", supported by the two sides.
History[]
List of "proxy wars" and other incidents:
- Korean War (1950–1953)
- Vietnam War (1955-1975)
- Berlin Wall (1961-1989)
- Cuban Missile Crisis (October 16–28, 1962)
- Soviet–Afghan War (1979-1989)
During the Cold War the United States and Soviet Union were also in constant competition for supremacy in nuclear warfare (see Nuclear Arms Race) and spaceflight capability (see Space Race). The Russians beat the US with the Sputnik as the first artificial Earth satellite.
