DMG Entertainment is the parent company of Valiant Comics, and a global media enterprise. DMG Entertainment is heavily involved in film production, video game development, comic book publishing, and innovative new storytelling methods[1]. Led by CEO Dan Mintz, DMG is in the process of bringing many Valiant heroes to the big screen, starting with 2020’s Bloodshot. This media company handles both the production and distribution of major film releases and bases its operations out of Los Angeles, California. After working on blockbuster hits such as Looper and Iron Man 3, DMG has become an influential force in Hollywood.

Although DMG Entertainment initially purchased a minority share in Valiant Comics back in 2015, it fully acquired the Valiant IP in 2018. Since then, DMG has been instrumental in the creation of various live-action adaptations of Valiant stories. Aside from Bloodshot, CEO Dan Mintz has announced plans to create television series and feature films based on superheroes like Faith, Ninjak, Rai, and many others.

In addition, DMG Entertainment is in the process of developing numerous video games based on established Valiant narratives. While DMG is best known for its involvement in the film industry, part of its established ethos is to explore new storytelling methods. DMG VR, also based in Los Angeles, is a separate branch of the company solely dedicated to creating all-new Virtual Reality experiences based on the Valiant comic book world and DMG’s other IP acquisitions, like Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere universe.

Under the leadership of DMG Entertainment, Valiant will continue to expand its impressive library of graphic novels. That being said, DMG is committed to exploring new storytelling avenues for Valiant. Dan Mintz has specifically laid out his goal to create a distinct and modern Valiant Cinematic Universe that stands apart from the established comic book films of today.

Valiant properties are well known for their story-centric approach and emotionally compelling touchpoints. DMG Entertainment has stated they plan to lend its creative vision and financing power to the Valiant Universe, bringing these popular stories to new platforms and changing the way fans can interact with familiar characters. The entertainment powerhouse already has multiple projects in development, including television shows and feature films with companies such as Sony Pictures and CBS Studios. Founder Dan Mintz also announced in 2017 the plans to begin their film universe with "Bloodshot", "Harbinger" and "Harbinger Wars".

DMG Entertainment CEO Dan Mintz has stated that he intends for the company to take a "wrecking crew" approach to shaking up the comic book movie space[2]. Their intention is to celebrate the edgier, more "relevant" nature of the Valiant characters in a way that differentiates them from the more mainstream counterparts at Marvel and DC.

History[]

DMG Entertainment was born from a partnership between Dan Mintz, Bing Wu, and Peter Xiao. Originally an ad agency, DMG underwent massive growth before emerging as one of Hollywood’s leading media companies. The relationship between Valiant Comics and DMG Entertainment began in 2015, when the studio acquired a minority stake in the business. In the years that followed, DMG Entertainment steadily purchased more shares before eventually taking full managerial control of the Valiant library in January 2018[3].

Feature Films[]

Bloodshot[]

As their first feature film endeavour, DMG Entertainment produced Bloodshot with Sony Pictures. Vin Diesel stars as Ray Garrison, a soldier recently killed in action and brought back to life as the superhero Bloodshot by the RST corporation. With an army of nanotechnology in his veins, the character has super-human strength and the ability to heal rapidly. But in controlling his body, the company has sway over his mind and memories, too, and so, the storyline follows his mission to find out his origins.

The movie reached theatres on March 13, 2020 as the first film of a 5-picture deal, however, due to the Global COVID19 Pandemic, the release went straight to digital on Tuesday, March 24. Bloodshot was originally planned to be followed by four movies: a sequel, two films based on the comic book series Harbinger, and a culmination in a crossover titled Harbinger Wars[4]. Initially scheduled to be the first instalment in the franchise, development of Harbinger was delayed in favour of releasing Bloodshot first[5].

Bloodshot suffered from being released in March 2020, during the early phases of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns that closed many cinemas worldwide. The move grossed $10 million in the United States and Canada, and $19.7 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $29.7 million, against a production budget of $45 million[6].

Harbinger[]

While no release date has been set, DMG Entertainment has confirmed that it is actively developing Harbinger with Sony Pictures[7]. This will be the second film of their 5-picture deal with Sony, following the release of Bloodshot. Reports suggest the film will enter production in the second half of 2019.

The story of Harbinger centers on Pete Stancheck, a telekinetic teenage runaway, and his relationship with his allies and the mysterious Harbinger Foundation. No actors have yet to be announced to have been cast, but reports suggest Dylan O’Brien is the studio’s preferred choice for the lead role.

Faith[]

Development is currently underway for a live-action adaptation of Faith, the superhero genre’s first plus-size female heroine. The feature would represent part of DMG Entertainment’s 5-picture deal with Sony Pictures, however, the order in which the films might be released is unclear.

Writer Maria Melnik, formerly of American Gods, will write the screenplay. Original Films is set to produce along with DMG Entertainment. No casting has been announced, but actresses like Jody Houser are popular in rumors and fan castings. Jody Houser, the primary writer for Faith's solo appearances, thinks Houser is a good casting choice, but she also stated that she would like Faith to be “the breakout role for an actor who hasn’t had their break”[8].

Shadowman[]

DMG Entertainment has released few details about the feature adaptation of Shadowman, but confirms the project is in active development.  In 2017, The Hollywood Reporter noted that Reginald Hudlin would direct. Hudlin was said to be rewriting the screenplay, originally penned by J. Michael Straczynski. It has been implied to not be part of the continuity featured in the Bloodshot and Harbinger films.

Archer and Armstrong[]

The final and currently least-understood film in DMG's announced slate is a film based on buddy duo Archer and Armstrong. It has received very little in the way of updates, but still has Ruben Fleischer attached to direct and Terry Rossio attached to write.[9]

Television[]

Quantum and Woody[]

DMG Entertainment is currently developing a television adaptation of the popular Quantum & Woody series[10]. The project is a joint venture with Getaway Productions, the production company founded by Joe and Anthony Russo. It is not yet publicly attached to a specific studio or network. Andrew Barrer ad Gabriel Ferrari are attached as screenwriters.

Doctor Mirage[]

After spending years in development hell, a television show based on paranormal investigator Doctor Mirage has been confirmed to be in official development for the CW Network. It is based on the Valiant Entertainment version of the character. [11]

Gaming[]

The Shadow Man[]

DMG Enterinatment announced the remaster of The Shadow Man for PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch[12].

While a release date is yet to be announced, Mintz released a statement in March of 2020; “As part of our continued growth into the video game industry, we’re happy to bring Valiant fans this immensely popular ‘Shadow Man’ character as the next title we release".

Valiant will also introduce a new “Shadow Man #1” comic alongside the upcoming video game. This was released on May 20th, published buy Cullen Bunn (“Venom”) and well-known artist Jon Davis-Hunt (“The Wildstorm”)[13].

Valiant, Blowfish Studios
Valiant has teamed with Blowfish Studios, the indie game developer behind such games as Siegecraft and Gunscape, to develop a slate of multiplatform video games featuring the popular characters from the company’s superhero universe[14].
