In the Pre-Order Edition, writer Alejandro Arbona confirms the first scene is set in an alternate universe, "so our Charlie lives to sling guns another day. (For now...tick tick tick...)". It is also confirmed that Bart's father is called Russell Simms; just like in Acclaim's series. The laboratory (unnamed power plant) is inspired by the look of Brookhaven National Laboratory that also has a superconductor.
