Synopsis[]
This is a tale of Magnus before he became the protector of North Am. As a young man constantly training to fight rogue robots, Magnus begins feeling burned-out. On advice from Grandmother, 1-A decides to take Magnus on a vacation to Mars. There, Magnus thwarts a Freewill plan to kidnap the Martian Governor's daughter! Returning the girl to her family, Magnus heads back to Earth with 1-A, once again eager to train.[1]

Quotes[]
- Every day of training is important. You cannot walk away.
- -- 1-A
- Watch me! First one leg-- then the other leg. All perfectly balanced-- just as you have trained me.
- -- Magnus
- How will your people be protected. If you stop training?
- -- 1-A
- People? What people? We're hiding on the bottom of the ocean. Around here, I can only save the whales.
- -- Magnus
- You have been a freewill for 400 years and still think like a standard issue rob -- in straight-logical-ponderous lines. Not like a human, at all. Is the boy normal? --- You know, darling -- does he have all his parts?
- -- Grandmother
- You really are deficient. Refresh your "programming." Consider it part of the training. Ultimately, he must learn to mix with humans. But right now, he needs a vacation.
- -- Grandmother
- It seems I have been delinquent concerning a part of your training. Studying all of the sciences and social structures, we need to study vacations.
- -- 1-A
- Remember! Treat me like a Servant-Rob.
- -- 1-A
- With pleasure!!
- -- Magnus
- Some savior! My first battle... failure...
