Bloodshot is a superhero film starring Vin Diesel as the titular hero Bloodshot, a soldier who is brought back from the edge of death and turned into a cybernetic super-soldier, without his memories. He must find out who he is, and use his newfound abilities to solve a dark conspiracy.

It is the first major motion picture based on the Valiant Universe, and the second official live-action adaptation of Bloodshot, after the Ninjak Vs. The Valiant Universe webseries. It was produced by Sony Pictures and theatrically released in the United States on March 13, 2020.

Synopsis[]

Based on the bestselling comic book, Vin Diesel stars as Ray Garrison, a soldier recently killed in action and brought back to life as the superhero Bloodshot by the RST corporation. With an army of nanotechnology in his veins, he’s an unstoppable force –stronger than ever and able to heal instantly. But in controlling his body, the company has sway over his mind and memories, too. Now, Ray doesn’t know what’s real and what’s not – but he’s on a mission to find out.[2]

Release History[]

  • The film was theatrically released in the United States on March 13, 2020.
  • In some European countries like Germany the film was already released on March 5, 2020.
  • The digital release already followed on March 24, 2020. This unprecedented 11-day gap between the theatrical and digital releases was caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing large numbers of theaters to shut their doors. [3]
  • The movie was finally released on DVD and Blu-ray on May 5, 2020.
  • In China, the movie was released on July 24, 2020.

Box Office[]

  • According to Box Office Mojo and The Numbers the movie grossed about $10 millions in the United States and $21 millions internationally, plus an additional $6.5 millions in China later on. In addition, it grossed about $15 millions from the home releases in the U.S. alone.

Background Info[]

  • This film was initially billed as the start of a "cinematic universe" of Valiant films, with Harbinger, Harbinger Wars, and Faith being some of the other concepts set to appear. However, in September 2019, Paramount acquired the film rights to the Valiant Universe from Sony Pictures, with the exception of Bloodshot. This divide makes the idea of a Valiant Cinematic Universe unlikely, at least one that features Bloodshot.[4]
    • A side effect of this transition meant that the movie's initial post-credits scene had to be scrapped. It would have featured Ken Watanabe as iconic Harbinger character Toyo Harada, in a scene that would have teased the planned Harbinger Wars film.[5]
  • Johnny Cash's cover of the song "Memories Are Made of This" was only used in the trailers.
  • A novelization of the film, aptly named Bloodshot: The Official Movie Novelization, was released in early February, 2020.
  • The Aviano Air Base is near Venice in the Northeast and the Amalfi Coast is near Naples in the Southwest of Italy, with a distance of about 530 miles (850 km) between them.
  • The scene inside of the tunnel was not shot in Budapest as the "Budapest Castle Tunnel" is a fairly straight tunnel with no curve and the ceiling lights look different, too. Likely, the scene was shot in some part of the Blanka tunnel complex in Prague, Czech Republic, as most filming took place in Prague and Cape Town.
  • The chase scene that is set in London, England, was actually filmed in Cape Town, Africa.

Comparison to the Comics[]

  • Besides Bloodshot, only two other characters are based on pre-existing characters from the comic books: Martin Axe is named after Ax, a character and villain who first appeared in Harbinger (Volume 1) in 1992. Ax is a computer expert and technician who would later cross paths with Bloodshot; see Rai (Volume 2) #0. Gina Garrison's role is very similar to Gina DeCarlo's from Bloodshot (Volume 2) published by Acclaim Comics in the late 1990s, however, in the comics it was never fully revealed whether Gina had been a real person or just a false memory.
  • The characters KT and Wilfred Wigans were introduced in the comic books after the release of the movie.
  • In the novelization, RST's super-soldiers are called Chainsaw, a group that also originates from Bloodshot (Volume 2).
  • The company "Rising Spirit Technologies" is based on Project Rising Spirit.

Easter Eggs[]

  • Guy Pearce is the main guy from Memento, a psychological thriller in which his character isn't able to form new memories and suffers from short memory loss.
  • The 1964 Ford Mustang is based on the same car that appears on the cover of Harbinger #1. In the comics, Bloodshot is never actually seen with that car.
  • In the false memory, Axe's dancing and singing along to the Talking Heads tune Psycho Killer is a homage to Bloodshot (Volume 2) in which Bloodshot is constantly seeing flashbacks of Gina DeCarlo and her mobster family in the style of the movie Reservoir Dogs in which the gangster Mr. Blonde starts dancing to the Stealers Wheel song Stuck in the Middle with You while torturing the victim. Also, the godfather of this wikia is MrBlonde267. It's a crazy world!
  • The lab table on which Bloodshot is resting and getting his nanite injections is based on panels from Rai (Volume 2) #0 and Bloodshot #0.
  • At some point, KT and Harting talk about other enhanced members and mention the names Layton and Van Hook. Layton created Project Risins Spirit and the Blood of Heroes and VanHook is the original creator of Bloodshot; see Eternal Warrior #4.
  • Shortly before Bloodshot is recharged Jimmy Dalton is chatting with him while drinking a protein shake. It's a nod to the comics in which it is Bloodshot who is constantly in need of protein. In the movie his nanties are simply recycled.
  • When Eric is updating the false memory input for Bloodshot's next mission the name "D. Perlin" is displayed. Don Perlin penciled the very first Bloodshot issues.
  • About twelve seconds into the end credits, a copy of Bloodshot #1 can be seen in the center of the screen.

One-of-a-Kind Promotional Cover[]

A very special variant cover featuring Vin Diesel's look as Bloodshot was created for Bloodshot Salvation #12; limited to one copy only and illustrated by Lewis LaRosa (Diesel's favorite Valiant artist), and signed by Diesel. The pose was inspired by Diesel's favorite Bloodshot pose, from Cary Nord's cover for Bloodshot Reborn #1. The issue was sold as part of a charity gaming auction called "Game4Paul", and was technically the first look at Diesel as Bloodshot.[7] This art later served as the inspiration for the film's first poster.
