"Freewills" are 41st Century robots that have gained sentience and can choose their own actions. This is usually considered a mechanical error that should be fixed, an action which essentially kills them as lifeforms and turns them back into unthinking machines. There are both good and bad Freewills, some wishing to co-exist with humans, and some wishing to destroy humanity for years of robot oppression.

- In Acclaim Comics, the term "Freewills" is not used often as Russ Magnus hates all robots and refers to them as "cans" that need to be destroyed to save the future.
- In the rebooted universe of Valiant Entertainment, the term "Freewills" is no longer used. Instead, future artificial intelligence is called "Positronic Minds", "Positrons," or simply "PTs."
