"Jonathan" was once a government operative named The Gardener, a plant sent to spy on the operations of Eric Henderson. After an attempt to bring Henderson's young ward (secretly an artificial human) into custody ended in an accident and amnesia, Henderson seized the opportunity, manipulating the amnesiac to become the boy's protector and the new Quantum.
