Paul[1] Benson is a former Major of the United States Air Force.

An unspecified number of years before, he saw something that looked like a "Moth-Man" space alien while piloting a F-14 Tomcat over Area 51. The experience touched him deeply, becoming a consuming obsession.

In 1995, when The Visitor first appears, he is reminded of that sighting and believes that Visitor is the "Moth-man". That motivates him into seeking Colonel Bradley to ask for his reinstatement into the USAF. The Colonel is unconvinced and uncooperative.[2]

At that point, he is unkempt and has lost purpose as well as his wife.[3] News of the Visitor's presence in Los Angeles renew his purpose.[4]

Benson then decides to pawn his guitar for some money and meet with two other people who believe to have seen space aliens (Matt and Mr. Rodriguez). He learns the tale of Matt's UFO sighting[5] and returns to Nevada, near Area 51, with Matt and Mr. Rodriguez, hoping to find answers. There he meets the Visitor and shortly after the Moth-Man that he saw years previously, which turns out to be an alternate form of the Men in Black. He ends up abducted along a woman that he had not met previously.[3]

A few weeks pass. During that time the Harbinger finds out about his past and turns violently against Toyo Harada. Harada later makes a deal with the Men in Black to recover Harbinger and resume control over him.

When Benson finally returns to Earth, he has been transformed by the Men in Black into one of them and causes destruction in the Los Angeles Harbinger building in order to draw the attention of Harbinger, which he does. Visitor, Flamingo and Chan are also drawn to the scene, as is Toyo Harada himself. Visitor, Harbinger, Flamingo and Harada initially join forces against the transformed Benson, but then Harada fights Harbinger and apparently convinces him to turn against Visitor again. The transformed Benson then succeeds at holding Visitor and revealing his face to Toyo Harada, Harbinger, Flamingo and Chan.[6]

Visitor's identity surprises and shocks Flamingo, Harada, Harbinger and even Chan. Benson's transformation into a Man in Black is unusual and he remains much of his original mind and personality, possibly because of his previous interaction with Visitor, and he decides to free Matt and Mr. Rodriguez from the UFO where they were kept captive.

Benson reveals to the people present that the Men in Black are vulnerable to ultra-low frequency sound, and Visitor, Harbinger and Harada make short work of the aliens before agreeing to accept Benson's sacrifice to make the destruction of the Men in Black's ship possible.[7]
