Shinji Tanaka serves as the President of Japan in the 41st Century. He took political power following the demise of Japan's robotic ruler Grandmother. He is the leader of the Humanists, a party who believes humans should be in charge of Japan's government. They are opposed by the Healers, an underground rebellion attempting to reinstate Grandmother's rule. Tanaka is frequently at odds with Japan's resident protector Rai.
