I didn't want to know my parents as 'activists.' Activism had killed them! I rebelled and got into science -- my mom was studying to be a doctor for awhile, and I guess that was part of it -- but mostly I just wanted to be as far away from the 'liberal' mindset I saw as having taken them away from me! I talk tougher than I act, though. Their big battle cry was "Believe, Embrace, Defend" -- and I know most of the time I still end up backing causes in spite of myself.
